What is the economic impact of irritable bowel syndrome? Joseph Sweeting MD |
||||
|
The economic impact of IBS is very large. The various surveys that have been done, particularly by the AGA (American Gastroenterological Association), indicate that some $30 billion a year is involved, counting total losses from productivity at work, attendance at work, attendance at school plus the cost of medical care itself. Many patients with IBS see a variety of doctors and often the cost of seeing multiple physicians and having multiple tests further increases the overall economic impact of this disease. It's in the same category with chronic illnesses like diabetes, for instance.
