| Professor Meinhard Classen MD, was from 1985 until
early 2003 Director of the Second Medical Department and outpatients clinic
of the Technical University Munich, Germany, and President of the World
Gastroenterology Organization (OMGE) from 1998 to 2002.
His scientific work in clinical gastroenterology and gastrointestinal endoscopy includes pioneering study of the physiology and pathophysiology of gastric and pancreatic function and of PGE1 influence on gastric secretion in humans. In 1971, Prof. Classen undertook the first electrical snare removal of gastric polyps, and, in 1973, the first endoscopic sphincterotomy applied to humans (together with L. Demling). In 1978, he introduced nasobiliary drainage (together with Dr. Wurbs). Professor Classen's current interests are pathophysiology; the treatment of recurring stones in the gallbladder and biliary duct; therapeutic endoscopy; treatment of biliary disorders by means of endoscopy; endoscopic ultrasound applied to the diagnosis and staging of gastrointestinal cancer; therapeutic laparoscopy. Prof. Classen is Past-President of the German Society of Internal Medicine and of its 100th Congress, the Past-Vice-President of the European Society of Digestive Endoscopy (ESGE), Honorary President of the International Gastro-Surgical Club and Past-Vice-President of the World Organisation of Digestive Endoscopy (OMED) from 1990 to 1997. He also served as Secretary-General of OMGE from 1990 to 1998. Prof. Classen is Dr.med. honoris causa of the Universities of Athens, Iasi and Istanbul. He also presently serves as chief editor of the journal Endoscopy.
