Professor Jean-Marie Collard MD, FACS

 

 

 

Professor Jean-Marie Collard MD, FACS, earned his doctorate in medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, graduating with "la plus grande distinction" in 1979. Six years later, he was certified as general and thoracic surgeon at the Catholic University of Louvain, and in 1997 received his professorship from the same school. He is currently Professor of Surgery and holder of the chair of gastroesophageal and laparoscopic surgery at the Catholic University of Louvain and also Chief of the Upper GI Surgery Unit at the Saint-Luc Academic Hospital, Brussels, Belgium.

Professor Collard is a specialist in conventional, thoracoscopic, laparoscopic, and endoscopic surgery and functional testing (bilimetry, ph-metry, and manometry) of the foregut. He is author of 100 scientific papers, including 32 book chapters by invitation, and was guest editor of one special issue of Hepatogastroenterology.

Professor Collard was chairman of 34 scientific sessions in international medical meetings and has made more than 360 scientific presentations. He is Member of the International Council of Surgical Gastroenterology. Secretary General of OESO (Organisation mondiale d'Etudes Spécialisées sur les maladies de l'Oesophage/World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus), Member of the Board of the HOPES Foundation of the UNESCO and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Professor Collard has been awarded the 14th American Esophageal Club Annual Award of Distinction (United States) and the Silver Medal of the City of Milan (Italy) for his contributions to the development of esophageal surgery.
