According to the traditional endoscopic classification, four categories of gastroesophageal reflux disease were defined; esophagitis, peptic stricture, Barrett's esophagus and adenocarcinoma.

Recent studies have revealed the high prevalence of nonerosive reflux disease, which should now be included, in a new paradigm of gastroesophageal reflux. This, of course, would still include erosive disease or esophagitis, and erosive disease complicated by such disorders as stricture and Barrett's.
