Several proton pump inhibitors are now available and include omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, and esomeprazole and research continues on the development of so called reversible proton pump inhibitors. The obvious question, of course, is are they all the same?

In some ways, for example in terms of mechanism of action, they are. But in other aspects there are important differences. In formulation, metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and interaction profile. There are also other potential areas of difference, including clinical efficacy, milligram per milligram comparison, and safety profile.
