The treatment of peptic disorders has changed tremendously in the past 10 years, since the worldwide introduction of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Soon after their introduction, this class of drugs appeared to be more effective than H2-receptor antagonists for the wide variety of peptic disorders, in particular peptic ulcer disease and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The more recent PPIs, rabeprazole and esomeprazole, have potential advantageous metabolism and pharmacokinetic profiles which may improve the clinical efficacy of PPI treatment in particular in the first days of treatment. |
