Which browser do I need to view this site?

We recommend using Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Netscape Navigator 4.73 or higher.

How can I best access resources on the Gastro-Pro site?

You can benefit from Gastro-Pro's resources using any Internet connection. Nevertheless, a faster connection such as ADSL or cable will give you a better viewing experience.

What are frames?

Gastro-Pro was built using frames. Therefore you need to have a frame-enabled browser in order to view correctly this site. All 3.0 or higher web browsers support frames. The option to accept frames can usually be activated or disabled in the Preferences menu of your browser.

What are Javascripts and how do I enable them?

Javascripts give special instructions to your browser to display images or information dynamically.

Javascript is typically enabled by default in most browsers. If you connect to Gastro-Pro and certain parts of the site do not function properly, you will need to activate this scripting option in order for your browser to perform a number of tasks correctly.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to the Tools tab in the navigation bar and select Internet Options. A pop-up window will display the Internet Options where you must select the Security tab. Verify that the security zone is set for the Internet and click the Custom Level button. Scroll down to the Scripting options and select 'Active Scripting enabled'.

If you are using Netscape Navigator, go to the Edit tab in the navigation bar and select the Preferences. In the Preferences window, select the Advanced option in the left pane and ensure that the 'Enable Javascript' option is selected in the right pane. If not, check this option and then click on the OK button.

Which screen resolution is recommended to view the Gastro-Pro site?

The Gastro-Pro site was designed for a screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels, but can also be viewed at a higher resolution.

To change screen resolution in a Windows environment, click on the start button, go to Settings and select Control Panel. In the Control Panel, select the Display icon. When the Display Window pops up, select the Settings tab and move the cursor of Desktop Area to the desired resolution. To change screen resolution in a Macintosh environment, choose Control Panels under the Apple Menu, choose monitors and select a setting in the Resolution table provided.

What do the words '56k' and 'Broadband' next to the ochre buttons mean?

56,000 bits per second (56 kbps) is the speed at which a '56k' modem, or internet access device, will transmit data between your computer and the internet.

'Broadband' telecommunication transmits many data channels (like voice, video, interactive digital services) simultaneously, just as more lanes on a highway permit more traffic. ADSL, ISDN or cable modems will give you broadband connection to the high-speed internet.

Practically all modems on the market now start at 56k, although you may have a slower, '28k' modem. If this is the case, you will have noticed that your internet download times are long and that it's hard to access and use other websites, as well. As a 28k user, you are a valued Gastro-Pro visitor, but your access to the site will probably be limited to the text portions.

However, the price of 56k or broadband modems is coming down in many countries and the telecoms infrastructure is being modernized. We would be glad to try and advise you, if you have further questions. You might also like to read about the UN's Global Digital Opportunity Initiative.

So how do I check my modem speed?

If you're using Microsoft Windows, go to "Start" (extreme lower left of your PC screen), then to "Settings", then to "Network connections...", then double-click on the icon (two PC screens and a telephone) bearing the name of your internet access provider. Once the new dialogue box appears, click on 'Properties' to read details about your modem.

For Mac users: Open your Control Panel through the Apple menu at the top left of your screen and scroll down to "Modem". It's as simple as that.

I can't view the videos on this site - what's wrong?

You may be facing several problems:

a) Have you installed the necessary QuickTime video player software? If not, please go to question 11.

b) Have you installed QuickTime but your download is still very slow or not progressing at all? Your modem speed is probably too low. Remember, you will need at least a 56 kilobit-per-second modem ('56k') to play streaming video.

c) If QuickTime is installed and you modem speed sufficient, but you still have to wait a long time to see video, the telecoms network might be congested. Typical peak times of internet use tend to coincide with office hours, especially at the beginning and end of the working day.

Gastro-Pro will work continually to improve rapid transmission of content to you, wherever you are in the world.

Why can't I use Windows MediaPlayer, which is already  installed on my computer?

QuickTime provides a distinct advantage over other video formats. We use QuickTime's progressive download feature to ensure that the movie gets through no matter how slow the connection is. QuickTime is also easily available online, and it's free. Read our Video help page.

How do I install the QuickTime player software?

QuickTime is a "player" for sound, video, animated graphics and music on the internet. It is produced and distributed on-line for free by Apple Computer. Clicking on the icon below will take you to the download page. Installation takes only a few minutes. Read our Video help page.

How do I turn up the sound when I play videos?

The quickest way is to click and hold down the loudspeaker symbol at the extreme left of the bottom of each video frame. A vertical grey bar with a button will appear. Keeping your left mouse button held down, slide the cursor across to the button on the vertical grey bar, then slide the button up (louder) or down (quieter). If your sound is still too low (and you use Microsoft Windows), click on "Start" (extreme lower left of your PC screen), go to "Settings", then to "Control panel", then double-click on "Sound and multimedia" to adjust volume settings.

For Mac users: Recent Mac extended keyboards have volume controls situated to the right of the function keys. Or you can use the volume setting on the control strip at the foot of your screen. Or open your Control Panel through the Apple menu at the top left of your screen, scroll down to "Sound" and adjust the settings. It's as simple as that.

Can I replay a video?

You can replay a video from the beginning, stop it, start it again, jump forward or back into any section of the video sequence you like, or even advance frame by frame. All it should take is a moment of experimentation, using your mouse to click on the switches or the click-and-drag button along the bottom of each video frame. Read our Video help page.
