Professor Guido N. J. Tytgat MD
 

Professor Guido N. J. Tytgat MD is Professor Emeritus in
Gastroenterology at the University of Amsterdam, where he has worked since 1976. The department he helped create at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam is a leading training unit in GE and world-renowned for diagnostic imaging, therapeutic endoscopy, basic and clinical research in inflammatory bowel disease, hepatic transport mechanisms, gallstone disease and pancreatic diseases. Prof. Tytgat obtained his MD and Ph.D. from the University of Louvain, Belgium and undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Washington, Seattle, before being appointed visiting medical scientist there.

Prof. Tytgat returned to Europe in 1971, when he became lecturer in gastroenterology and head of the division of gastroenterology-hepatology at the Amsterdam Medical Centre (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam until he retired from that post in 2003. Prof. Tytgat is the founder of the European Postgraduate Gastrosurgical School and a member of many distinguished scientific organizations, including the Royal Dutch Academy of Science. He is currently associate editor of Gastroenterology and editor-in-chief of Baillière's Clinics in Gastroenterology.
