Using video

Why QuickTime?

We use QuickTime technology to display Gastro-Pro’s unique videos. The makers of QuickTime do not sponsor us in any way, nor do we have a business relationship with them.

QuickTime provides a distinct advantage over other video formats. We use QuickTime's progressive download feature to ensure that the movie gets through no matter how slow the connection is.

We believe that it offers you, the user, the best of the currently-available means of enjoying quality video downloads on the internet. True, Windows Media Player is by far the most widespread software for video viewing, but the standard version of Quicktime is well-known, reliable, free and very easy to obtain.

If you haven’t already got QuickTime, click on the icon to the right. Your browser will open a new window with the QuickTime download page. The download and installation should take only a couple of minutes.
You'll also find the 'Get QuickTime' icon at the foot of Gastro-Pro’s every page.

Nine steps to get the best from Gastro-Pro video

Here are nine frequently asked questions – and answers.

6. How can I make it louder? Quieter?

8. Why is the video fuzzy?

9. Why did the video transmission suddenly stop before the end?

1. What do the words '56k' and 'Broadband' next to the orange buttons mean?

56,000 bits per second (56 kbps) is the speed at which a '56k' modem, or internet access device, will transmit data between your computer and the internet.

'Broadband' (also called 'wideband') telecommunication transmits many data channels (like voice, video, interactive digital services) simultaneously, just as more lanes on a highway permit more traffic. ADSL, ISDN or cable modems will give you broadband connection to the high-speed internet.

Practically all modems on the market now start at 56k, although you may have a slower, '28k' modem. If this is the case, you will have noticed that your internet download times are long and that it's hard to access and use other websites, as well. As a 28k user, you are a valued Gastro-Pro visitor, but your access to the site will probably be somewhat slower.

However, the price of 56k or broadband modems is coming down in many countries and the telecoms infrastructure is being modernized. We would be glad to try and advise you, if you have further questions. You might also like to read about the UN's Global Digital Opportunity Initiative.

2. So how do I check my connection speed?

If you're using Microsoft Windows, go to "Start" (extreme lower left of your PC screen), then to "Settings", then to "Network connections...", then double-click on the icon (two PC screens and a telephone) bearing the name of your internet access provider. Once the new dialogue box appears, click on 'Properties' to read details about your modem.

For Mac users: Open your Control Panel through the Apple menu at the top left of your screen and scroll down to "Modem". It's as simple as that.

3. The video isn’t playing!

You may be facing several problems:

a) Have you installed the necessary QuickTime video player software? If not, please go to question 5.

b) Have you installed QuickTime but your download is still very slow or not progressing at all? It may be that your modem is a 28k modem. Don't worry, you can still watch the videos but the download time will be considerably longer.

c) If QuickTime is installed and you modem speed sufficient, but you still have to wait a long time to see video, the telecoms network might be congested. Typical peak times of internet use tend to coincide with office hours, especially at the beginning and end of the working day.
Gastro-Pro will work continually to improve rapid transmission of content to you, wherever you are in the world.

4. Why can't I use Windows MediaPlayer, which is already installed on my computer?

Both are good, but Gastro-Pro uses QuickTime because it has good video compression and usually permits faster video downloading. We prefer the QuickTime screen interface, as well. QuickTime is quickly available online, and it's free.

5. How do I install the QuickTime player software?

QuickTime is a "player" for sound, video, animated graphics and music on the internet. It is produced and distributed on-line for free (link to QuickTime download page) by Apple Computer.

If you attended the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Bangkok, February 24 - March 1, 2002, you should have received a free CD-ROM with information about the Gastro-Pro preview site and a number of software 'plug-ins', including QuickTime. To increase viewing enjoyment on Gastro-Pro, click here or on the Flash icon on the right to install the free version of Macromedia Flash.

6. How can I make it louder? Quieter?

PC/Windows users: The quickest way is to click and hold down the loudspeaker symbol at the extreme left of the bottom of each video frame. A vertical grey bar with a button will appear. Keeping your left mouse button held down, slide the cursor across to the button on the vertical grey bar, then slide the button up (louder) or down (quieter). If your sound is still too low, click on "Start" (extreme lower left of your PC screen), go to "Settings", then to "Control panel", then double-click on "Sound and multimedia" to adjust volume settings.

Mac users: Recent Mac extended keyboards have volume controls situated to the right of the function keys. Or you can use the volume setting on the control strip at the foot of your screen. Or open your Control Panel through the Apple menu at the top left of your screen, scroll down to "Sound" and adjust the settings.

7. Can I replay a video?

Of course, you can stop, start and replay a video as often as you like: from the beginning, or jumping forward or back into any section of the video sequence, or even advancing frame by frame. All it should take is a moment of experimentation, using your mouse on the click-and-drag video progression button along the bottom of each video frame.

Click and drag the round button as it progresses across the bottom of the video display screen: right drag will speed the video up to let you skim forward to the desired scene, while left drag will back you up quickly to repeat a sequence you've already viewed.

8. Why is the video fuzzy?

You might not have adjusted your connection speed settings (see point 2) and are therefeore receiving images at a lower resolution than necessary.

PC/Windows users: Place your mouse cursor over the video and click on the right-hand button. A miniature QuickTime icon should appear in the bottom frame of your screen. Open the icon by clicking on it and go to 'Connection speed' to ensure your PC has the right modem-speed settings.

Mac users: Place your mouse cursor over the video, click and hold. Choose 'Connection speed' in the contextual menu to ensure your Mac has the right modem-speed settings.

9. Why did the video transmission suddenly stop before the end?

This could be because the video download to your computer from the Gastro-Pro server has been interrupted. Check to ensure you are still connected to the Internet. If you are still connected, it could be that traffic congestion on the Internet has momentarily interrupted transmission. In this case, click the 'Refresh' button on your Web toolbar (top of screen) then try running the video again.
