Sidney J. Winawer MD

Dr. Sidney J. Winawer is internationally recognized for his contributions to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. He has done pioneering work in describing the developmental stages of colorectal cancer, defining familial high-risk groups and promoting screening.

Dr. Winawer is an attending physician and member with tenure at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and holds the Paul Sherlock Chair on the Gastroenterology and Nutrition Service there. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and co-chairs the NYC Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign.
Dr. Winawer's work - he has published more than 400 research articles, reviews, and book chapters - has earned him, among other distinctions, the Sloan-Kettering Alumni Award, the Rudolf Schindler Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the Fiterman Award from the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) and, the Clinical Achievement Award from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), which he has served as President.

He is also the editor of a textbook on colorectal cancer and co-author of Cancer Free, a book on cancer prevention written for he general public. His book Healing Lessons has been reviewed by the New York Times and translated into several languages. In the USA, Dr. Winawer helped Katie Couric plan and appear on the NBC Colorectal Cancer series and also participated in the White House Colorectal Cancer Campaign kickoff in 1999.

Dr. Winawer received his BA from New York University and his MD degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. After completing a GI fellowship on the Harvard Service of Boston City Hospital, Dr. Winawer served as a faculty member of Harvard Medical School. He was a founder of the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and has been appointed to the NYC Health Department Advisory Committee for its Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign. He is co-chair of the newly-organized International Digestive Cancer Alliance (IDCA) which has initiated a worldwide campaign to increase awareness and prevention of digestive cancers. The Alliance was launched in 2002 at the Vatican with support by the Pope, in collaboration with major world medical societies, the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and WHO.
